Daybook

Outside my window...
It's a bit gray and gloomy, at least compared to the glorious weather yesterday - mid-seventies, abundant sunshine, and just a hint of chill in the breeze. Today, the promise of Autumn is much closer at hand. While I love the cooler temperatures, I am going to miss the sun.

I am thinking...
About education, and how learning never truly stops. Recently, I decided to teach myself Latin (I know, I know - I hear your jeers from here!), and then signed up for Coursera. I'll be working my way through Surveillance Law, Sustainable Development, and Modern & Contemporary American Poetry over the next few weeks. Nerd that I am, I'm looking forward to it.

I am thankful...
For technology and all that it helps me accomplish. Project Guttenberg and other ebooks, FitBit, countless apps for yoga, meditation, Couch 2 5k, banking and so much more on my phone, music wherever I go - there is an ease to so many things that I wouldn't have found possible not long ago.

In the kitchen...
I have made a fantastic, amazing, delicious, life-changing plum masterpiece0, after being directed to Smitten Kitchen's Plum Cake recipe. Pictures and details to follow. Right now I'm too busy savoring plummy goodness and pondering the addition of slivered almonds on top.

I am wearing...
The usual workday suit with my "power pearls." There's something lovely about long ropes of imperfect, nuanced pearls. Or at least I think so.

I am creating...
Or at least, thinking about creating a blanket. I have tons of yarn, and I've been looking at ideas to use up a lot of my stash. I'm thinking about starting to work on some sort of crochet or knitted log-cabin-ish blanket. We'll see. There's a lot of clashing colors in there.

I am going...
To New York City in thirty-two days!

I am wondering...
If the Farmer's Almanac is going to be accurate this year. "Stinging cold" doesn't sound very promising, nor does "above-normal" snowfall. I might start eyeballing those LL Bean flannel lined jeans again, despite the mom cut.

I am reading...
A biography of the Queen Mother, a book on Victoria and Albert, a Georgette Heyer romance, and Father Barron's Catholicism. Bit of a mix there!

I am hoping...
That this attempt at the running gig sticks. I'm signing up for the Cap City Half Marathon again, hoping to best my time from last year. I had such a poor showing; I'm hoping to train harder over the next few months (do you hear that, weather?) so I can redeem myself.

I am looking forward to...
My trip to NYC with The Boyfriend; quite a few weddings we're set to attend over the next few months; Autumn with its fantastic colors and tastes; and some new routines I'm working on implementing in my life.

I am learning...
Patience, the hard way. Be careful what you pray for, right?

Around the house...
I'm starting my usual fall cleaning, and hoping I can make it stick. I always come up with grand Martha Stewart-esque aspirations, where I'm scrubbing my trash can with bleach every week - and I always fail not too long after that. After reading Cheryl Mendelson's Home Comforts, I'm newly motivated, and better equipped. We'll see what sticks this year.

I am pondering...
How this summer seems to have just been one awful bit of news after the next. Some days, I wish there was a positive-news-only channel.

I am praying...
For patience and self-discipline. Lord, I'm a glutton for punishment, aren't I? I'm also praying a special intention for someone close to me who has been looking for employment. If you could join me, I would appreciate it. And lastly, for Sarah Harkins, who I never "met" online, but who seemed to touch so many lives. It's always a tragedy when someone is taken so young. With the holidays looming, I'm keeping her family and friends in my prayers as they face this for the first time without her.

A favorite quote for today...
"Without love, deeds, even the most brilliant, count as nothing." - St. Therese of Lisieux

One of my favorite things...
Pumpkin spice anything. Yes, I know that makes me basic, but I don't care!

A few plans for the rest of the week...
Sticking with these new workout plans; laundry and meal planning; and hopefully, a nice walk through a Columbus Metro Park (The Boyfriend and I have a new goal to hike each one).

A peek into my day...
I woke up this morning full of energy and went for a run first thing. Instead of tiring me out, it's left me wanting to do more. This would be all well and good, but I've been stuck at my desk researching and writing today. Going to have to get moving post-work to get all these wiggles out. Not even the post-lunch full belly slump is able to get me down today.

Yum, just look at that delicious treat!
